About this verb#
- Perfective of гибнуть. Class 3a with fixed stem stress and the characteristic -ну- drop in the masculine past (погиб, not *погибнул); the suffix returns in feminine/neuter/plural (погибла). The participle погибший is the standard term for 'the deceased' in tragic contexts.
