Umenka/About

About Umenka.

Umenka is an attempt to make Russian, and especially the maddening complexity of Russian verbs, feel learnable. Free, ad-free, bilingual, no sign-up. Just the language.

A fox at the foot of a mountain with a book on its lap, looking up at the long path ahead: the journey of learning a hard language

Mission

Russian has the steepest verb learning curve of any major language: two aspects per verb, mobile stress, sixteen morphological classes, mutations that erupt mid-paradigm, and a network of prefix-derived siblings for every common root. Most textbooks teach a handful of verbs deeply and the rest by hand-waving. Umenka exists to be the single place where every Russian verb gets the same careful treatment: full paradigm, aspect partner, class, stress type, examples, and the rule that explains why it conjugates the way it does.

Vision

The free, definitive Russian verb reference: the resource a learner can rely on for the first year of study and the resource a translator can rely on a decade in. Today: 1756 verbs, 17 grammar chapters, downloadable PDF cheatsheets, EN and DE. Tomorrow: spoken audio for every form, illustrated short stories that exercise the grammar in context, more languages on the learner side, and gradual expansion across the rest of Slavic where the same morphological depth makes existing dictionaries inadequate.
