About this verb#
- Modern Russian has dropped the present-tense paradigm of быть entirely. Where English would say 'I am a student', Russian uses zero copula: «Я студент». The pronoun and the predicate sit side by side with nothing between them.
- The form есть does survive, but only in two contexts: the possession frame «у меня есть книга» ('I have a book'), and emphatic identity statements like «Россия есть Россия». Both are fossilised remnants, not a productive present-tense paradigm.
- Past tense (был / была / было / были) and future (буду / будешь / будет / будем / будете / будут) are the live, productive parts of the paradigm. The future also doubles as the impf-future auxiliary for every other verb: «я буду читать».
