About this verb#
- Reflexive perfective of начать, used for events and processes that 'begin themselves'. Only the third-person forms are in real use because subjects are events, not people. Past tense pulls stress onto -ся in the masculine (начался), while feminine and plural keep the ending stressed (началась, начались). С + genitive marks what the beginning consists in.
